Male Sexual Dysfunction

Male sexual dysfunction includes erectile dysfunction (ED), diminished libido, and abnormal ejaculation.

  • Erectile dysfunction — ED is defined as the consistent or recurrent inability to acquire or sustain an erection of sufficient rigidity and duration for sexual intercourse.

  • Decreased libido — Is a lack of sexual desire.

  • Ejaculatory disorders — Ejaculatory disorders are a group of disorders that include premature, delayed, and retrograde ejaculation and anorgasmia.

By far the most common is erectile dysfunction, this problem increases with age and certain lifestyles. Some of the problem can be linked to a phycological component such as increased stress,

Risk factors — 

  • diabetes (high blood sugar)

  • hypertension (high blood pressure)

  • atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)

  • stress, anxiety, or depression

  • alcohol and tobacco use

  • some prescription medications, such as antidepressants, pain medicine and medicine for high blood pressure

  • fatigue

  • brain or spinal-cord injuries

  • hypogonadism (which leads to lower testosterone levels)

  • multiple sclerosis

  • Parkinson’s disease

  • radiation therapy to the testicles

  • stroke

  • some types of prostate or bladder surgery.

  • spinal cord  

  • back injury

  • multiple sclerosis

  • dementia

  • pelvic trauma 

  • prostate surgery 

  • priapism including

  • hyperprolactinemia 

  • hyperthyroidism

  • hypothyroidism
