Testosterone

Testosterone, is not just a male hormone, its in a class of hormones called androgens; these androgens are responsible for giving more masculine traits. Some of the functions that testosterone helps with in the body are:

  • Prevents bone loss

  • Decreases body fat

  • Increases norepinephrine helping with mood

  • Increases muscle mass

  • Increases libido

Symptoms of decreased testosterone are:

  • Anxiety

  • Decreased muscle tone

  • Decreased libido

  • Dry, thin hair

  • Muscle wasting

  • Weight gain

  • Mild depression

Normal production of Testosterone.

  • The body senses the low free testosterone level and takes the brakes of the hypothalamus, allowing it to increase the secretion of GnRH.

  • The GnRH then stimulates the pituitary to secrete LH and FSH.

  • LH stimulates the Testicles to increase testosterone production.

  • The increased testosterone enters the blood stream and some of it is bound to SHBG and some remains free.

  • The free testosterone can enter the tissues and work on the target receptors.

Production of Testosterone As We Age.

  • The body senses the low free testosterone level and takes the brakes of the hypothalamus, allowing it to increase the secretion of GnRH. There's two reasons for this, as we age, one is increasing SHBG and decreased production of LH.

  • The GnRH then stimulates the pituitary to secrete LH and FSH, but LH decreases with the aging process and increasing estrogen production also turns off hypothalamus, as we age.

  • LH stimulates the Testicles to increase testosterone production, but not at the same rate as before.

  • The increased testosterone enters the blood stream and most of it is bound to the increased SHBG and little remains free.

  • The free testosterone remains to low to prevent symptoms of low testosterone.

Treatment With Testosterone.

  • The body senses the high free testosterone level and puts the brakes on the hypothalamus, stopping the secretion of GnRH.

  • The decreased GnRH then stops the pituitary secretion LH and FSH.

  • Decreased LH and FSH stops stimulation of the testicles, decreasing testosterone and sperm production.

  • The free testosterone from treatment can enter the tissues and work on the target receptors.
